The area of Fanes, which extends around the Peitlerkofel massif, is a land steeped in mythology. Ladin legends tell of the invincible Princess Dolasilla, of precious gems with magical powers, of marmots and dwarves. Legends that, on closer inspection, revolve around the great mysteries of life that still confront us today.

The cradle of the Ladin culture
The municipality of San Martino in Badia (at an altitude of 1,127 m), with its hamlets of Longiarù, Piccolino and Antermoia-Passo delle Erbe, forms the gateway to the Val Badia valley. This is a heavenly holiday resort framed by the Puez-Odle and Fanes-Sennes-Braies national parks. The valley is embraced on one side by the Dolomites, and on the other by Mt. Plan de Corones. It is this seclusion that allowed the ancient Ladin culture to be preserved throughout the centuries, with its traditional handicrafts, the original "Les Viles" mountain hamlets and the colourful flair of the local customs and costumes.
„Bëgngnüs!“
Sei willkommen! Fremd und ungewohnt klingt das Ladinische zunächst. Eine über 2000 Jahre alte Sprache, verwurzelt im Rätoromanischen. In der Römerzeit verschmolz das Rätische der Urbevölkerung mit dem Volkslatein der Händler zum Ladinischen. Heute ist es die Muttersprache von etwa 30.000 Ladinern und neben Deutsch und Italienisch die dritte Landessprache in Südtirol. Ladinisch ist eine der ältesten Sprachen der Dolomiten, die Ladiner zählen zu den kleinesten Sprachgruppen in Europa.
